When you shop for baby shower gifts, you don't often consider what others will purchase. If you throw a wedding shower, it's quite common to suggest themed gifts. For example, some people throw kitchen themed wedding showers and ask all guests to bring gifts for the bride-to-be's kitchen along with recipes they've used and loved.

This is less common with baby shower themes, probably because people tend to have a stock of traditional baby shower gift ideas they know the expectant mother will want and need. In my opinion, great baby shower themes have to fulfill two conditions. They have to be unique and fun, and they have to be easy. It's no use to me if I have to spend weeks special ordering stuff off the Internet to make my baby shower ideas come together.

Although I'm as big a fan of unique baby shower themes as anyone, there's such a thing as going too far. Here's a good general question: Can I get most of the stuff I need without leaving my neighborhood/town/city? If the answer is yes, you're in good shape.

These unique baby shower themes are creative and original, but you won't go crazy looking for decorations, favors, and invites.

Baby shower cupcakes make a great alternative to cake. As with a wedding shower or any other party, you want to have something beautiful and delicious to form a centerpiece. Traditionally, that's meant baby shower cakes. But just as few people serve traditional wedding fruitcakes anymore, many people have moved away from baby shower cakes in favor of their cute and tiny cousins.

Cupcakes are perfect baby shower ideas. They lend themselves naturally to being cute and tiny, just like a baby. And they're much easier to get rid of at the end of the day. People don't like cutting up the cake to take it away with them, but almost anyone will take a cupcake or two.

Many people forget baby shower music. They think of baby shower themes, decorations, games, food, gifts -- absolutely everything except the one thing that keeps a party moving through those awkward silences. I've even been to baby showers that don't play music at all, and you can feel the difference.

Music puts us in a social mood. It relaxes us, and it helps get a party into swing. You don't have to play music all night, of course: you can turn it off for games, gift giving, or whatever you like. But you should at least have it playing while people come in and eat, and you should always select your music as carefully as any other part of your baby shower.
