Baby shower organization is the key to a successful shower. If possible, you should give yourself about two months to plan. Two months lets you take your time, enjoy the process, and not feel too rushed over the whole thing. If you have less time, it's still very possible: you'll just have to condense some of your planning and -- if you're really rushed -- skip a few steps altogether.

Generally, though, it's more fun to take your time and do your baby shower planning properly. So if you have your eight weeks -- or even if you don't -- here's a timeline to help you figure out how to organize a baby shower.

Many people don't think about baby shower centerpieces. After all, the centerpiece isn't what it once was -- essential to any dinner or party. You can have perfectly beautiful baby showers and never think about a centerpiece -- I guarantee no one will comment on the difference.

So why bother with a centerpiece at all? There are a couple of reasons. First of all, a really good centerpiece attracts a lot of attention, which means you can keep the rest of your baby shower decorations very simple. Second, the centerpiece often doubles as a gift for the mom-to-be, which is a nice touch for any shower. And third, because it's not as common anymore, it sets your shower apart from the crowd.

When you shop for baby shower gifts, you don't often consider what others will purchase. If you throw a wedding shower, it's quite common to suggest themed gifts. For example, some people throw kitchen themed wedding showers and ask all guests to bring gifts for the bride-to-be's kitchen along with recipes they've used and loved.

This is less common with baby shower themes, probably because people tend to have a stock of traditional baby shower gift ideas they know the expectant mother will want and need. In my opinion, great baby shower themes have to fulfill two conditions. They have to be unique and fun, and they have to be easy. It's no use to me if I have to spend weeks special ordering stuff off the Internet to make my baby shower ideas come together.

Although I'm as big a fan of unique baby shower themes as anyone, there's such a thing as going too far. Here's a good general question: Can I get most of the stuff I need without leaving my neighborhood/town/city? If the answer is yes, you're in good shape.

These unique baby shower themes are creative and original, but you won't go crazy looking for decorations, favors, and invites.

Baby shower entertainment doesn't have to mean games. Don't get me wrong: I love a good party game, and I've listed tons of my favorites on this site. But sometimes it's fun to try something different.

Maybe the mom to be just isn't the tame type -- you get the feeling she'd rather be having the shower in a dance club. Or maybe you have a group of outgoing adventurous friends who just aren't into baby bingo. No problem! You can wow the crowd with these interesting baby shower activities.

Baby shower cupcakes make a great alternative to cake. As with a wedding shower or any other party, you want to have something beautiful and delicious to form a centerpiece. Traditionally, that's meant baby shower cakes. But just as few people serve traditional wedding fruitcakes anymore, many people have moved away from baby shower cakes in favor of their cute and tiny cousins.

Cupcakes are perfect baby shower ideas. They lend themselves naturally to being cute and tiny, just like a baby. And they're much easier to get rid of at the end of the day. People don't like cutting up the cake to take it away with them, but almost anyone will take a cupcake or two.
